Nailheads are a timeless, classic accent that have currently experienced a sudden resurgence in popularity. Traditionally used on the arms and edges of masculine leather furniture, nailhead and stud accents are showing up in all aspects of home decor and fashion! When applied to home furnishings and paired with lighter colors and contemporary fabrics and finishes, nailhead details can create a bold new look that is both transitional and modern.
J Banks Owner and President, Joni Vanderslice, includes many nailhead details in her designs for our furniture line, the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture. Not just for application in straight lines, Vanderslice uses nailhead to create intricate patterns and designs for her pieces.
The Ella Chair, shown here with the Lariat naihead pattern, debuted with high praise at the Spring 2012 High Point Market for Home Furnishings. The addition of the nailhead adds emphasis to the lines of the piece, and the flowing Lariat pattern provides an unconventional feminine touch.
Other nailhead patterns that Joni designed include; Cannon Ball, Botanic, Mosaic, Morrocan and Gear.
The Amy Ottoman (above) is shown with the Botanic nailhead pattern in a pewter finish. The contrast of the richly colored fabric with the lighter metal allow the nailhead to really pop! However, on the neighboring Doris Chair, Joni specified an antique finished nailhead, allowing the nailhead to add a more subtle touch of texture and sophistication.
Not just for upholstered items, Joni uses nailhead as a prominent feature on a variety of casegoods including the Dyer Cocktail Table. With a faux leather finish, this piece has traditional elements, but they are used in completely original ways!
Here, J Banks Designer, Shelley Wilkins, finishes the Amy Ottoman with the Wave nailhead pattern.
And, look how easily the entire piece can be transformed just by selecting a new nailhead pattern. This pattern is called Leaf.
