Hannah Fulton : Pretty in Pink!

Recently some friends and I threw a shower for our sweet friend, who is expecting a baby girl this month.  Pink was center stage and we took cues from fashion and design to pull the shower together with current style!

table display 4

The hostesses (and the mommy to be) love chevron!  This paper runner from the J Banks Retail Store ($34 for a 20” x 50” roll) was a perfect way to add a graphic pattern to our tabletop. Another of my favorite J Banks finds are these acrylic wine glasses.  I have a set of the tumblers and the wine glasses in clear, and another friend has the pink, so we combined them on the table and didn’t worry for a second about anything breaking!

The shimmery gold and cream hues were set off by mercury glass votives that were sprinkled along the table. The look was so subtle and pretty, we decided to mirror it on chevron place cards and menus. The left over paper will be perfect gift wrap!

When we designed the cake, we used an ombré concept on the icing, and within the cake for the layers!

Pink Montage

There is lots of love for ombré these days –ombré painted walls, furniture, fashion, finger nails and even hair.

We also used this concept for our flower arrangement, starting with light blush colored roses and cascading into deep pink tones.

And speaking of the flowers, nestled into the candelabra of fresh roses are (faux!) hydrangeas which I purchased from the J Banks retail store – at only $12 per stem. These were key in adding fullness to the arrangement, and because they are silk, they are hearty and not fragile, perfect to work with when creating this kind of detailed arrangement.

One of the hostesses is also a J Banks client, so it was fun to see our interior design as the perfect backdrop for our celebration.

The elegant Osborne & Little window treatment fabric created a billowy, soft, dreamy background to our intimate table for twelve.

One of my favorites from the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture, the Deb chair, provided the perfect perch for the mother to be to open gifts!

For this chair, our savvy client selected a textured aqua fabric. You’d never know it was suitable for outdoor use!  Not only does it look fabulous, but it performs well and is a suitable choice for her family of five.

Pink Vietri Flatware

I gifted baby (who’s mother and I share a passion for cooking and gourmet foods) with a set of Vietri Bambino flatware in PINK of course!  (J Banks also carries these in blue and clear for other foodie babes.)

The menu was delicious but light (we had to leave room for that cake!).

As guests arrived, they sipped on a bubbly rosé accented with a hot pink rock candy stick and nibbled on caprese sticks, melon and prosciutto pops and crab cakes. Baskets of assorted mini muffins were nestled on the table. A savory goat cheese soufflé was served aside spring greens tossed in a light balsamic, topped with roasted beets, candied walnuts and grilled chicken.

‘….Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice!’

Party guests were invited to create their own favors using pink sweet treats! They chose from cotton candy, pink popcorn, hand dipped marshmallows and more – all displayed in clear glass vessels. We also used this darling book, What Are Little Girls Made Of? (J Banks Retail $7.00) as the guest book for the event!

Despite the chilly temperatures lately, this shower has me in full spring mode!

Design Team Favorites: Emerald

Emerald Header

Every December, Pantone identifies a shade it believes will be “the breakthrough color of the following year” after sifting through trends from around the world.

“Emerald is the color of balance and harmony, enhancing one’s sense of well-being and inspiring insight and clarity,” Pantone said.

A contrast to last year’s invigorating tangerine tango, emerald (Pantone 17-5641) is a lush hue that, “is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eyes sees more green than any other color in the spectrum, “said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

In honor of the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year, our staff shared their emerald favorites!

All of this talk of emerald makes us grin with trend-setting pride! We used this very color to introduce the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture during the 2007 Fall High Point Market. Take a look at our 2007 showroom snapshots below!

J Banks Inspiration

Joni recalls having to have the fabric specially milled because emerald fabric was simply unavailable at all of the factories. People were just not producing products in this hue. What a difference a few years can make.

We are excited to celebrate emerald in 2013!

Happy New Year!

Hannah Fulton : Summer Entertaining

I love to entertain. Whether it’s a casual picnic on the beach, or a formal dinner party – I enjoy nothing more than sharing delicious food and tasty drinks with friends. As a Designer, it’s second nature to add whimsical touches to my soirees. One of my favorite ways to spice up a party is to put together my tabletop using design elements in unique ways – urns as vases, lamps ON the table and special finds as centerpieces. Here are few photos that have inspired me!

This color combination is so classic! The blue and white stripes provide a crisp nautical feel while the touches of pink soften the look. I love the blue and white vases, and the concept of taking a collection you would typically see indoors on bookshelves and showcasing the pieces on the center of the table.

Bringing a substantial furniture piece outside can set the stage for your outdoor soiree. Add lamps, and your guests will feel right at home!

The lamps and bold pillows add a whimsical touch to this table.

This tabletop shows how ‘simple’ can be oh so sophisticated.  Planning a scheme around one color (or white!), and then adding a pop of color with beautiful flowers is a great way to make the (sometimes overwhelming) task of setting a beautiful table easy.

The setting is the star!  The subtle grey and mercury glass touches, along with the airy white sheers, play up the weathered wood docks and turn this casual space into an elegant setting.

I can’t help but to take home MANY of the wonderful tabletop treasures which come into the J Banks Retail Store on a regular basis!  A few of my favorites which add whimsy and charm to my parties are:

My Dransfield & Ross crab, gator, flamingo and fish napkin rings are always a conversation starter and they look fun on a formal table. On my list (of one million items) of things to purchase from J Banks, are these great wavy dinner napkins, also from Dransfield.  I think everything that Dransfield & Ross comes out with for tabletop is so much fun!

These are my favorite cocktail napkins. The custom monograms by Julia B look like antiques! (But the initials are mine AND pink!)

These bud vases are also placecard holders!  I recently used them at a 5 year old birthday party – perfect for little ladies and women alike!

In the summertime, these acrylic wine glasses are key to all of my outdoor entertaining.

This book makes concocting your signature cocktail a breeze!

Summer is one of my favorite times to entertain, and with so many delicious finds from my garden and the local farmer’s market, the menu is always easy to plan!  Here’s a little inspiration for you in the form of my favorite summer recipes…

This grape bruschetta is a nice change from the traditional tomatoes and basil version, and is served cold.  This recipe is refreshing with a pop of heat!

Grape Bruschetta

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup red grapes, diced
  • 1 cup blue and/or black grapes, diced (I used all red grapes)
  • 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or flat leaf parsley (I used Cilantro)
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley leaves for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 4 slices whole grain bread, quartered (I used a baguette – but needed 1-1/2)
  • 6 ounces herbed goat cheese, slightly softened
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise

Directions:

1.      Combine grapes, onion, jalapeno pepper, cilantro and vinegar in medium bowl. Season, if desired, with salt and pepper. Let stand at least 30 minutes.

2.      Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Arrange bread on large baking sheet in a single layer and bake, turning once, 8 minutes or until lightly golden brown and crisp on both sides. Remove and let cool.

3.      Combine goat cheese with mayonnaise in small bowl until smooth. Season, if desired, with salt and pepper. Evenly spread cheese mixture onto crostinis, then top with grape salsa.

When it is hot and the tomatoes are bountiful, Tomato Pie is my ‘go to’ recipe.  It’s the perfect way to use a plentiful harvest of tomatoes, and great for a luncheon.

Tomato Pie (Serves 6 to 8)

Ingredients:

  • 9 inch pie shell (Baked)
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 4 tomatoes, peeled and sliced
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 ounces white cheddar cheese, grated
  • 4 ounces cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/3 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350
  2. Spread the pie shell with Dijon mustard.
  3. Layer the sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper, and cheeses in the pie shell ending with the cheese.
  4. Mix together the mayonnaise and parmesan cheese in a small bowl.
  5. Spread on top of the pie.
  6. Bake for about 20 minutes until bubbly.
  7. Let cool and serve at room temperature.

Strawberry Salad

Ingredients:

  • Greens of your choice – for this salad, I love butter lettuce tossed with red leaf lettuce.
  • Sliced strawberries
  • Slivered almonds (toasted)
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Your choice of dressing. I love Brianna’s Blush Wine Vinaigrette

I love doing variations of this salad (in the winter, I substitute sweetened dried cranberries for the strawberries and do more of a rustic dressing  (stay tuned this fall)

Cold citrus delight! The perfect compliment to the rich Tomato Pie.

Frozen Lemon Souffle (Serves 4)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest plus 3/4 cup lemon juice (from 3 lemons)
  • 8 large eggs, whites and yolks separated
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup cold heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups raspberries (6 ounces)
  • Confectioner’s sugar, for dusting

Directions:

  1. Wrap outside of a 3 1/2-cup souffle mold or four 6-ounce ramekins with parchment, extending 2 to 3 inches above rim (it should fit snugly). Secure with tape; set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, whisk together granulated sugar, lemon zest and juice, egg yolks, and salt over medium-high. Cook, whisking constantly, until mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon and small bubbles form around edge of pan, about 5 minutes (do not boil). Immediately remove from heat while continuing to whisk. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve into a heatproof bowl, pressing on lemon curd with a rubber spatula.
  3. Place plastic wrap directly against surface of curd and refrigerate until cool, about 30 minutes (or up to overnight).
  4. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat egg whites on high until stiff peaks form, 2 minutes. Gently fold egg whites into cooled lemon curd. In the same large bowl, beat cream on high until stiff peaks form, 1 to 2 minutes. Gently fold whipped cream into lemon curd mixture. Pour into mold and freeze until firm, 6 hours (or up to overnight). To serve, remove parchment, top with raspberries and dust with Confectioner’s sugar.

I hope that you have been inspired and, will have fun setting your table!

Bon Appetit,

The White Sofa Project

We took one sofa in our retail store and asked each of the J Banks Designers to style the sofa and surrounding space utilizing pillows, lamps and accessories.  Each Designer had the ability to create a space that not only showed their “of-the-moment” loves from our retail store, but also demonstrated how a design client can easily change a space by adding a few new elements. Every week a different Designer would style the space and the results were always unique. Below is an image of each design.

The White Sofa Project: Hannah Fulton

We took one sofa in our retail store and will have a different designer each week style the surrounding space using pillows, lamps and accessories.  The end result will show how accessories can change the overall feeling of a room.

Hannah Fulton was second to style the space. Here is what she had to say about her selections:

JB: What did you want the mood or feel of the space to be?

Hannah: To me, this space is a cool, comfortable retreat. The fish accessories hint at a location close to the water. I could see someone returning from the beach or lake and settling in comfortably for a cocktail.

(We ADORE the brass box on the cocktail table)

JB: What is your favorite item or items in the vignette and why?

Hannah: I love the rug from KPM.  It’s new but was made to look antique. The shades of blues and the patchwork pattern really ground the vignette and reiterate the ‘fun yet sophisticated’ look.  I always think antique elements and collected treasures add to the character of a room.

JB: What can you tell us about your accessory choices?

Hannah: I used accessories minimally so that there was an uncluttered feel.  If I’m on vacation, I don’t want to be surrounded by things. Clean lines and ‘functional’ accessories like the baskets, clock, book and a box to hide remote control, etc. are key!

JB: Tell us about your color choices.

Hannah: I was inspired by our fabulous Trina Turk pillows in vibrant shades of blue and green. The pillows set the tone  and really make the space pop.

We love the sophisticated but relaxed space that Hannah created. Keep following our blog to see more designer interpretations.

If you’d like to purchase or receive additional information on any of these featured products please feel free to contact our retail store at 843.682.1735.

Market Update : January 2012 Americasmart, Atlanta, GA

Several members of our team attended the Americasmart in Atlanta, GA last week.  Anna Ruby, Kelly Caron and Hannah Fulton took the time to share some of their favorite finds at market:

Anna:  Repurposing at its best! These throw pillows made of vintage Hermes scarves add the instant chic factor to any decor.

Kelly: I fell in love with the Greek key serveware by The Mane Lion.  This beautiful colorful collection of Italian ceramic tabletop gets me really excited about Spring and Summer coming up!  And I LOVE  LOVE LOVE the chips and dip platter.

Anna: A fresh approach from Pulvermacher Designs. I love the global influence, patterns and vibrant colors in these decoupage accessories.

Hannah: I love Waylande Gregory’s newest additions – mirrored everything!

Kelly: Ame & Lulu is one of my favorite “go to’s” for fun bags and accessories for all different activities including the beach, tennis, golf, etc. They are offering great refreshing colors for Spring and Summer!

Anna: This Stray Dog paper mache demi lune is the coolest. I think a pair of these would be glamourous yet playful  nightstands.

Kelly: Peter Alan Designs had great new table top items for interior/exterior use.  They are casual chic and always in style for entertaining.

Anna: This is statement artwork that doesn’t cost a fortune.  I love the simplicity of the silhouette on the reclaimed wooden backdrop.

Hannah: These Sugarboo enclosure cards have witty sayings for any occasion.

Anna: Joni and I loved these canvas and leather totes (so much that we purchased them for ourselves and the store). They are nautically inspired yet have fashion detailing that make them a Spring must have!

Hannah: Vietri’s new Italian Stoneware collection Lastra has great organic lines and is very durable. The pitcher is particularly stunning.

Kelly: Nancy Price has introduced her collection through Design Legacy.  I love the whole color palette with soft blue-grays, taupe, brighter blues and some metallics as accents. It is a beautiful twist on ordinary furniture pieces.

Anna:  This quirky ottoman also by Design Legacy just delights me! I imagine it in a funky yet hip beachside retreat.

Hannah: I could think of a MILLION fabulous arrangements to do in Camilla House’s oversized woven urns.

Anna: I am addicted to color so this lacquered turquoise dining table from Roberta Schilling made me swoon.

From Left to Right: Hannah Fulton, Retail Designer, Kelly Caron, Retail Associate and Registry Coordinator, Anna Ruby, VP Creative and Kathleen Mayers of KPM flooring enjoy a much needed break after a long day at market.

If you see any items you would like to order or want more information about them, come see us at 35 Main Street, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926 or call us at 843.682.1745.
