Joni Loves : June 2013

Joni's Loves Header

1 - Color Scheme

I love the color of these doors on this home on Lake Summit, NC.  It reminds me of a color I selected for the Palmetto Bluff post office (see insets).  We are using this color combination for a traditional cottage there now.  I will share photos when it is complete!

2 - Africa Food Truck

We saw these impressive food vendors in Ghana.

3 - Henri Bendel Bag

I spotted this brown and white laser cut barrel bag at Henri Bendel in New York City.  It is very similar to the one I am currently carrying!

4 - Ivanka Trump Store

Also while in New York I went to Ivanka Trumps Flagship Boutique and Bridal Salon with my daughters Grace and Sarah.  What a unique space.

5 - Dock Dining

We took this silly picture of my pug while eating on the dock one night. It is too cute not to share.

I hope you are having a great summer!

Trend Alert: Spring has Sprung!

With the resurgence of colorful floral prints in the fashion and design world, it’s easy to lose track of the source of all of that blooming inspiration – the real deal.

We were reminded of nature’s beauty on a recent trip to Joni’s home! Here’s a little snippet into nature’s bounty…Vanderslice style.

Front Door

As soon as we pulled up we noticed the gorgeous flowers leading to the front door.

Foxgloves in a Row

The foxgloves (large white flowers) are undoubtedly the current garden showstoppers.

As we moved around to the side of the home we discovered Joni’s vegetable and herb garden.

Vegetable and Herb Garden

Joni’s plentiful garden is full of her favorite herbs including:

Herbs

She has veggies too – everything you need to make a fresh summer salad:

Veggies

Because a special centerpiece is always part of the table at the Vanderslice’s home, Joni grows flowers that she can snip whenever. Some examples include:

Flowers

We also saw signs of more blooms to come including hydrangea’s loaded with buds and canna lilies beginning to bud as well!

One of the advantages of having a garden is being able to have such easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables when entertaining!

Garden Vegetables for Salad

Garden fresh! Thanks to Lauren and Grace (Vanderslice) for creating this delicious dish for us.

Avocado, Garden, Salad, Vegetable

And Joni created this simple and beautiful centerpiece by mixing assorted bud vases and flowers on her dining table. The assortment of bud vases in varying heights is a twist on the traditional single arrangement.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed these pretty pictures and invite you to go take a little break and get outside and ‘smell the roses.’

Design Team Favorites: Emerald

Emerald Header

Every December, Pantone identifies a shade it believes will be “the breakthrough color of the following year” after sifting through trends from around the world.

“Emerald is the color of balance and harmony, enhancing one’s sense of well-being and inspiring insight and clarity,” Pantone said.

A contrast to last year’s invigorating tangerine tango, emerald (Pantone 17-5641) is a lush hue that, “is the most abundant hue in nature – the human eyes sees more green than any other color in the spectrum, “said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

In honor of the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year, our staff shared their emerald favorites!

All of this talk of emerald makes us grin with trend-setting pride! We used this very color to introduce the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture during the 2007 Fall High Point Market. Take a look at our 2007 showroom snapshots below!

J Banks Inspiration

Joni recalls having to have the fabric specially milled because emerald fabric was simply unavailable at all of the factories. People were just not producing products in this hue. What a difference a few years can make.

We are excited to celebrate emerald in 2013!

Happy New Year!

Shelley Wilkins: Tried & True – Good Ole Blue

I am not alone in my love of blue.  Everyone loves blue.  It is a safe and timeless color that is always on trend and easy to incorporate into almost any design.  Here are a few images I pulled together in which the color blue was used beautifully:

From the runway to your home…

From jewelry to wallcoverings…blue is here to stay!

These room settings are different styles but blue is the constant.

This is a great traditional room with antiques, blue fabrics and a blue cocktail table.

Nautical blue and white

Transitional with clean lines

Artsy and Eclectic

Red, white and blue – an all American classic with a modern twist

A neutral room with blue accents

You can use blue in paints, lamps, china, porcelain and even tile.  Blue does not always have to be used in fabrics.

Blue and white stripes painted on walls

Blue lacquer – Amazing!

All greens with blue and white porcelain – Fabulous!

Love the blue porcelain with pops of pink

Blue tiles

Timeless blue Mottahedeh china

I love the stripes on these great new lamps from Ralph Lauren.

This is one of my favorite pieces on the J Banks Retail floor in of course, blue and white!

This was a project that I worked on where the client had an existing assortment of different blue and white porcelain that we grouped as a collection above seating in the breakfast room.

This piece of furniture was originally painted black and I transformed it with blue and white lacquer paint so that it became the perfect place to display her collection as well.

As you can see, blue is easy and versatile.  Truly tried and true – good ole blue!

JB’s – Courtyard Couture

Fashion Week has come to J Banks!

Hosting events in our beautiful facility is one of the things J Banks does best… and we were delighted to open our doors to the next generation of aspiring designers for Fashion Camp.

Under the instruction of the very talented Sandra Fitzsimmons, the girls learned how to develop a concept, gather inspiration, sketch their looks, shop for materials, and sew their creations.

The girls learned that resources are everywhere! They even re-purposed old t-shirts into fabulous frocks.

As they developed their looks, they were careful to “edit” so that one element did not overwhelm the whole garment. Sometimes the editing process would lead to new inspiration and totally new looks!

Another big lesson of fashion camp: No collection is complete without brand development and a fashion show!  The girls developed collection names and custom tags for each item. Next they picked a venue location and planned the day down to the last detail (furniture, music, sound system, etc). Finally they produced announcement fliers and personalized invitations for family and friends to the big event.

J Banks hosted the event in the courtyard in front of our beautiful LEED certified building.

As the crowds of family, friends, and curious visitors took their seats for the show, the girls put the finishing touches on their looks.

When the big moment arrived everyone was so surprised by how much the girls had accomplished and learned in one short week.

Are we looking at the next design stars?  Our vote is – YES!

Fabulous work ladies!  Creative… Bold… Professional… and Beautiful!  We are already looking forward to next year!

JB
