Trend Alert: Spring has Sprung!

With the resurgence of colorful floral prints in the fashion and design world, it’s easy to lose track of the source of all of that blooming inspiration – the real deal.

We were reminded of nature’s beauty on a recent trip to Joni’s home! Here’s a little snippet into nature’s bounty…Vanderslice style.

Front Door

As soon as we pulled up we noticed the gorgeous flowers leading to the front door.

Foxgloves in a Row

The foxgloves (large white flowers) are undoubtedly the current garden showstoppers.

As we moved around to the side of the home we discovered Joni’s vegetable and herb garden.

Vegetable and Herb Garden

Joni’s plentiful garden is full of her favorite herbs including:

Herbs

She has veggies too – everything you need to make a fresh summer salad:

Veggies

Because a special centerpiece is always part of the table at the Vanderslice’s home, Joni grows flowers that she can snip whenever. Some examples include:

Flowers

We also saw signs of more blooms to come including hydrangea’s loaded with buds and canna lilies beginning to bud as well!

One of the advantages of having a garden is being able to have such easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables when entertaining!

Garden Vegetables for Salad

Garden fresh! Thanks to Lauren and Grace (Vanderslice) for creating this delicious dish for us.

Avocado, Garden, Salad, Vegetable

And Joni created this simple and beautiful centerpiece by mixing assorted bud vases and flowers on her dining table. The assortment of bud vases in varying heights is a twist on the traditional single arrangement.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed these pretty pictures and invite you to go take a little break and get outside and ‘smell the roses.’

Trend Alert: Nailhead!

Stud Word

Nailheads are a timeless, classic accent that have currently experienced a sudden resurgence in popularity. Traditionally used on the arms and edges of masculine leather furniture, nailhead and stud accents are showing up in all aspects of home decor and fashion! When applied to home furnishings and paired with lighter colors and contemporary fabrics and finishes, nailhead details can create a bold new look that is both transitional and modern.

J Banks Owner and President, Joni Vanderslice, includes many nailhead details in her designs for our furniture line, the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture. Not just for application in straight lines, Vanderslice uses nailhead to create intricate patterns and designs for her pieces.

The Ella Chair, shown here with the Lariat naihead pattern, debuted with high praise at the Spring 2012 High Point Market for Home Furnishings. The addition of the nailhead adds emphasis to the lines of the piece, and the flowing Lariat pattern provides an unconventional feminine touch.

Nailhead Patterns

Other nailhead patterns that Joni designed include; Cannon Ball, Botanic, Mosaic, Morrocan and Gear.

The Amy Ottoman (above) is shown with the Botanic nailhead pattern in a pewter finish. The contrast of the richly colored fabric with the lighter metal allow the nailhead to really pop! However, on the neighboring Doris Chair, Joni specified an antique finished nailhead, allowing the nailhead to add a more subtle touch of texture and sophistication.

Not just for upholstered items, Joni uses nailhead as a prominent feature on a variety of casegoods including the Dyer Cocktail Table. With a faux leather finish, this piece has traditional elements, but they are used in completely original ways!

Here, J Banks Designer, Shelley Wilkins, finishes the Amy Ottoman with the Wave nailhead pattern.

And, look how easily the entire piece can be transformed just by selecting a new nailhead pattern. This pattern is called Leaf.

What do you think about these nailhead details?

We think Joni “nailed” it!

Trend Alert: Keepin’ It Brassy!

Brass is not just for doorknobs and switch plates.  Brass has always been associated with traditional design but now it is popping up in all genres of home decor. We took a quick look around our J Banks Retail Store and recently completed projects, and selected a few of our current brass favorites.

These brass boxes from our friends at Madegoods are chic and unique. The brass color adds warmth and a bit of elegance to the industrial chain link design.

Many of our favorite brass accents are lamps. We love that brass comes in a variety of finishes such as oil rubbed (left) and polished (right). You can completely change the look of a brass piece just by altering the patina, or finish color of the metal.

Designer Shelley Wilkins recently used the oil rubbed lamp pictured above in a residential project.

A staff favorite, this Nixon end table comes with a reversible top that is walnut on one side and orange lacquer on the other.

You may have also spotted this table in Andy Cohen’s Clubhouse on Bravo!

This gorgeous oven is in Villa Scuola, located on the Castello di Casole property.

Do you have a favorite brass item?  We would love to hear from you. Until then, “Stay brassy my friends.”

Go for the Gold!

Inspired by the Olympics, we asked our Designers to share some of their favorites in gold, silver and bronze.

Designers Janet Perry and Jenny Ladutko love these fabulous light fixtures that they specified for the Dataw Island clubhouse.

This sconce has a mercury glass look but is unique with its combination of gold as well as silver.

This light fixture has stunning details, and the gold candlesticks differentiate the piece from other chandeliers.

Janet and Jenny weren’t the only Designers loving golden light fixtures.  Deb Van Plew loves these Etch Shade pendant light fixtures from Tom Dixon.

These look great alone or hung in groups!

Deb also loved this bronze hued hand-rubbed table.

Designer, Doris Gilch, shared this amazing amber Murano glass light fixture that she, Joni and Adrienne just installed at our project, Hotel Castello di Casole in Tuscany, Italy!  The statement fixture is the perfect focal point and sets the ambiance for the wine room in the Ristorante Tosca.

Designer Hannah Fulton shared her current favorite faucet from Kohler’s Purist Collection.

Hannah loves the high spout and sleek design!

Jennifer Farese shared a fun fact. There was actually no bronze, silver or gold at the ancient Greek Olympic Games.  Winners were crowned with the beautiful, yet rather simple prize of an olive branch wreath, or kotinos. She loves how Michael Aram translated this symbol of victory into his signature Olive Branch Collection.

Available in our Retail Store, the Olive Branch Collection is created using castings of oxidized solid bronze. The pieces are simple and beautiful.

Lisa Whitley was also loving golden hued lighting.  She selected this antique brass lamp as one of her current favorites.

Lisa loves the brushed finish as it provides a softer look than a polished finish would.

Adrienne Warner shared this picture of a favorite golden landmark in Paris. The Renommée des Sciences (Fame of the Sciences) is on the right bank of the Alexander III Bridge.

What are your favorite gold, silver, and bronze items?

To learn more about any of these items, give us a call at 843.682.1745.

Crazy for Quatrefoils!

During our recent work in Italy on the interiors of the Hotel Castello di Casole we started to notice a trend.  Quatrefoils everywhere!  While this shape is certainly not new, (even the name is old meaning “four leaves”  from the Latin quattor, four, plus folium, a leaf), we love the modern twists it has taken. When we returned home, we began seeing quatrefoils in items in our Retail Store, and even in the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture. Take a look at what we found.

This is a cabinet detail in the Hotel Castello di Casole.

Do you spy the quatrefoil moulding in the Visconti Bar of the Hotel Castello di Casole?

Here is a better angle

Joni fell in love with these Greenwich Side Tables at the Spring 2012 High Point Market.  Oomph creates them in so many fabulous colors and finishes. We adore this funky modern take using quatrefoils, and we can’t get enough of their creative creations!

These hurricanes are elegant and classic. The combination of brass and mercury glass is just perfection.

The Marianna Mirror is a new piece from the J Banks Collection for Stanford Furniture.  Joni based it on a chapel floor that  she saw in Tuscany (see picture above). This particular version of the shape is called a ‘barbed quatrefoil.’ A barbed quatrefoil is a quatrefoil that has triangular projections at the intersection of two adjacent foils. This mirror can come finished in any  Sherwin Williams color.  The possibilities are endless!

Where have you seen quatrefoils?  How would you incorporate them into your home decor?
