JB Hearts Our (Last) Summer 2011 Intern!

If you’re a regular reader, then you’ve been hearing about our summer interns. We have one final face of Summer 2011 to share… Blair Kawa.

Blair is a senior interior design major at SCAD Savannah. This summer she worked in the design studio as a design assistant. Just a few of her tasks included expediting orders, calling for memos, approving samples, talking with reps, finding furniture, drawing plans, photographing client’s homes, installing new projects, AND… dun, dun, daaah… adding sparkle to the J Banks blog!!  The blog is a team effort that could never reflect the true nature of J Banks without everyone’s creativity and input, but Blair’s graphic design magic has created pizzazz and visual interest!  Using her publishing skills to to pull together all the parts  – photography, interviews, and concepts – have been a fabulous asset to developing our story.

We asked Blair to pull together a few things that she loves to give us a snap shot of her design style and personal flair.

JB: What is your design style?

Blair: Classically Quirky!  I love the formal qualities of traditional design, but I have an irresistible pull to the eclectic and bohemian. It’s all mixed up with my love-hate relationship with color… more love than hate, obviously.

JB: What are some of your goals?

Blair: Design! Design! Design! Interior design puts the pep in my step every day. No matter where I live, where I work, or what particular job I’m doing, I will be doing interior design. One day I’d LOOOVE to design a hotel or a museum. Or a Balinese hut on stilts? A girl can dream…

JB: Is interior design what you’ve always wanted to do?

Blair: Actually… I graduated with a degree in political theory!  I worked in Washington D.C. for The President’s Council on Bioethics and wrote a thesis on bioethics in public policy making. Weird, right?

JB: Wow. Neat experience! And what is one of your biggest accomplishments?

Blair: Well… I got my black belt in martial arts… and I’ve traveled to over 24 different countries… I think diversity is the name of the game. I’m proud that I’m a very diverse person, and I think my design reflects that sensibility.

JB: What’s one of the biggest lessons you’ve learned at J Banks?

Blair: I can’t pick!  It’s been the whole package deal!  This summer I learned how to be a real (as opposed to “school”) interior designer…. and I learned that I have a LOT MORE TO LEARN.  J Banks has been the perfect School Of Life… Having the chance to be here was worth more pure gold.

If J. Banks is the School of Life, Blair has made the grade! Thanks for all the cheerful help, and best of luck as you round out your final year of school…

The future is bright!

JB Heart’s Our Interns

This is the second blog installment featuring the special interns that have worked hard with J Banks this summer.

Jennifer is getting a Master’s degree in Luxury & Fashion management. We know – sounds very cool, but what exactly does that mean? Someone with this kind of degree typically goes into fields associated with analyzing consumer demand, marketing and advertising, retail operations inventory management, buying, etc…within a wide range of luxury retail venues. Think about anything from cars and yachts, to interiors and lifestyle, to fashion and food. In other words… this degree has it all!

This summer she has been working under Anna Ruby and Jennifer Farese. Her primary jobs have included inventory system management… a.k.a. keeping track of every single thing that goes in and out of the J Banks store. Big job! She has also been one of the smiling faces on the retail floor, ready to help you if you should pop in.

JB: Jenn, tell us a little bit about how you got here…

Jenn: I have an undergrad in accounting… which is INCREDIBLY handy, believe it or not.

JB: We believe it! What are some of your goals when you graduate?

Jenn: Get a job. Period. Just kidding… I’d love to do store management with an emphasis on buying and supply operations.

JB: What have you learned at J Banks that will help you reach your goals?

Jenn: I have learned how much I love working for a smaller venue – that is, a smaller venue with international reach! When you work at a huge, corporate company you are so specialized. a person could spend their whole career as “The Long Sleeved Sweater Buyer.”  At J Banks everyone’s roll is multifunctional and you have the opportunity to wear many hats. I love that!

JB: We do too! And we all agree – its definitely not boring at J Banks!

Jenn’s collection of favorites are inspired by her beloved color palette – orange and brown (she definitely fits right in at J Banks!) The throw is made of 100% recycled cotton from In2Green. The super chic, deco inspired side table with orange lacquered top is full of surprises – it offers two looks in one. The top reverses to a gorgeous natural finish wood plank for the days you feel more traditional. Summery letterpressed lobster coasters are a whimsical must for outdoor gatherings. And last but not least, where would a luxury management girl be without her Vogue?… this coffee table book is a classic.

Having Jennifer on the team has been a great asset this summer. That said, saying goodbye was just too hard…. so we are pleased to announce that you’ll continue to see her working our retail floor on the weekends until she graduates in November of this year. After that, the world will be her oyster (low country style, of course).

We Heart You Jennifer,

JB Hearts Our Interns

Every summer J. Banks gets many eager applications for a position as a summer intern. The spots have become coveted and applications competitive. This summer our interns have always been ready to help, learn, try new things, and grow.

We’ve loved getting to know them… so we thought you would too…

Ashley — a native Hilton Head Islander — is a junior at Winthrop University. She majors in interior design… and she is considering taking up a minor in Sustainability. (Cool, right?)

Her job this summer has been to manage the materials library, find “just the thing” (fabric, furniture, or lighting) for our busy designers, order samples, call on pricing, and so much more… all the things that keep the J.Banks gears turning.

When we asked about her personal style, Ashley said, “I’m young, so I’m still figuring that out… but I lean towards transitional, contemporary.”

When we asked about her favorite ice cream, Ashley was less tentative… “Butterfinger!” she declared with conviction. Mmmm!

We asked Ashley to pick out a few of her favorite things to share with you. This is what she found:

Embroidered Pillow: Baudard Linen Decorative Cushion – “I Love the embroidered flowers and the green and grey color scheme.”

Sofa: Duralee – “The simplicity is beautiful.”

Upholstery Fabric: Clarke & Clarke – “The green is fantastic, and the fabric is even named after me! ‘Ashley Pattern’ ”

Fixture: Crystorama – “Modern chandeliers are so cool.”

Inspiration Image: “Black frames & black and white art hung on an empty wall is my favorite…”

Finally, I asked Ashley, “What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned during your time at J.Banks?”

She said, “I guess the main thing I learned at J. Banks was never to be afraid to ask questions. Asking questions was the way that I was able to learn as much as I did during the internship.”

A great lesson… A great collection of cool items… And a great girl!

We will miss you Ashley.
