JB Heart’s Our Interns

This is the second blog installment featuring the special interns that have worked hard with J Banks this summer.

Jennifer is getting a Master’s degree in Luxury & Fashion management. We know – sounds very cool, but what exactly does that mean? Someone with this kind of degree typically goes into fields associated with analyzing consumer demand, marketing and advertising, retail operations inventory management, buying, etc…within a wide range of luxury retail venues. Think about anything from cars and yachts, to interiors and lifestyle, to fashion and food. In other words… this degree has it all!

This summer she has been working under Anna Ruby and Jennifer Farese. Her primary jobs have included inventory system management… a.k.a. keeping track of every single thing that goes in and out of the J Banks store. Big job! She has also been one of the smiling faces on the retail floor, ready to help you if you should pop in.

JB: Jenn, tell us a little bit about how you got here…

Jenn: I have an undergrad in accounting… which is INCREDIBLY handy, believe it or not.

JB: We believe it! What are some of your goals when you graduate?

Jenn: Get a job. Period. Just kidding… I’d love to do store management with an emphasis on buying and supply operations.

JB: What have you learned at J Banks that will help you reach your goals?

Jenn: I have learned how much I love working for a smaller venue – that is, a smaller venue with international reach! When you work at a huge, corporate company you are so specialized. a person could spend their whole career as “The Long Sleeved Sweater Buyer.”  At J Banks everyone’s roll is multifunctional and you have the opportunity to wear many hats. I love that!

JB: We do too! And we all agree – its definitely not boring at J Banks!

Jenn’s collection of favorites are inspired by her beloved color palette – orange and brown (she definitely fits right in at J Banks!) The throw is made of 100% recycled cotton from In2Green. The super chic, deco inspired side table with orange lacquered top is full of surprises – it offers two looks in one. The top reverses to a gorgeous natural finish wood plank for the days you feel more traditional. Summery letterpressed lobster coasters are a whimsical must for outdoor gatherings. And last but not least, where would a luxury management girl be without her Vogue?… this coffee table book is a classic.

Having Jennifer on the team has been a great asset this summer. That said, saying goodbye was just too hard…. so we are pleased to announce that you’ll continue to see her working our retail floor on the weekends until she graduates in November of this year. After that, the world will be her oyster (low country style, of course).

We Heart You Jennifer,

JB

An Afternoon with a Rep

You know you’re in for a treat when Diane (the J. Banks resource librarian) comes by your desk and says… “They’re here! Come on!”

Today she said, “You’re in for a treat… it’s Jud… from Highland Court!”

Every week highly knowledgeable representatives from the most fabulous companies in the world come to our offices. They share fabric, furniture, lighting, faux painting, wall-covering, bedding, and more. The endless stream of options is simply dazzling.

Inevitably, we dissolve into “Ooohs!” and “Ahhhs!” as we flip through gorgeous linen, velvet, wovens, and prints. Today was no different.

When we find something that we fall in love with, we order memos. These little squares of fabric are destined to evolve into full design visions for our clients… or sometimes just for our own imaginations.

As you probably know very well, times have been hard in recent years… especially in the building related professions. Yet, today’s rep was positive.

“Companies have gotten lean by necessity. We cut out the weaker items in our line, and now we believe that what we carry is stronger and more compelling than ever,” Jud said today.

We are so happy to be in a business that perseveres even through challenging times. A big “Hurray!” for all those who are continuing to create beauty and support artisans around the world.

To our Rep of the Day – Jud – Thank you for bringing us such beautiful, quality products… and an even bigger thanks for bringing us a dose of your cheerful, positive, can-do spirit.

As they say… “Represent!”

The Working Woman

CHIC working women – our office is full of ’em!  And our retail floor provides a small glimpse into what adornes our teams’ desks and totes…

For the tech savvy, we offer  an exquisite collection of  leather accessories from Maison Tukuya. Show your  iPhone, iTouch and iPads some love by showcasing their beauty with an equally stunning accessory.

AND….

For the lady who knows the value of a handwritten note (we still think it’s a definite DO), check out our effortlessly chic Jack and Lulu Stationery. Embossed with beautiful gold emblems in a wide variety of motifs and colors, both sender and receiver will be delighted before they even get to the written sentiment.

We know that all a cluttered desk needs is a sharp, personal accessory to make it feel like a vibrant new space!

1. Try this cheerful bud vase (which could double as a pen/pencil holder) for a splash of modern whimsy and color.

2. Your business cards deserve a snappy new home too! Take a look at these inexpensive-but-oh-so-cool card holders for a touch of summer hue.

Some of the less glamorous aspects of being a working woman include… strained eyes and papercuts. Avoid both with…

3. These super sophisticated and compact reading glasses. They fold up into this neat little package that comes in a wide variety of colors.

4. Elegant letter openers double as both conversation piece and manicure saver. We’re currently crazy about the sculptural and textural glamour of this L’Objet gecko. His high quality cast metal body means that he can double as a paper weight. Plus… he’s just plain cute!

Inspired? Or need a jolt of inspiration? Take a moment out of your Busy Working Woman Day and drop in for some stylish fun.

See you soon!

Tuesday Tabletops – 4th of July Celebration

We may not be event planners, but J.Banks knows a well-dressed table when we see one (and we delight in the sight!). What better way to launch our new series “Tuesday Tabletops” than in preparation for our nation’s birthday!?

Our inspiration is Classic Americana with a light, fresh, coastal flair. This is a holiday that goes to show, your place settings don’t have to be stiff to be elegant. Classic basics make a perfect pallet, and fun details like napkin rings and placecard holders add sparkle!

Whether you celebrate your family traditions with a picnic or a sit down dinner, consider adding some creative little details in our nation’s “signature colors.” Make sure to stop by our retail store for a pop of patriotic pizzazz, or even for some star-spangled suggestions!

Send us photos of your special tablescapes! We’d love to become inspired by you!

Happy Tuesday!

J.Banks

Geometry Lesson

If you asked us to tap into the eighth-grade geometry students hidden deep within our personas to recall the difference between obtuse or acute angles, we’re not so sure we’d be able to. What we can tell you, as we hearken back to the days of learning of angles, degrees, and hypotenuses, is that we are seriously loving their resurgence in the design world. These abnormal angles are so unexpected yet remarkably understated. They’re clean without being harsh, playful without featuring polka dots or pink, and as sophisticated without the pretense. How smart are the lines in this fabulous accent chair? And that chandelier is to die for. If you’re looking for a fresh way to update your décor without committing to a crazy fad, a lesson in geometry may be just what you need.
