The Scoop on HD Expo 2011

Beyond the glitz, glamour and pulsating energy that surround Las Vegas, this year’s Hospitality Design Expo (HD Expo) held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, brought on its own montage of surprises. Design seminars from industry legends, inventive contract materials, and a massive emergence of new products, specifically in outdoor living, were just a few of the reasons we loved this year’s Expo.

Top 10 things we loved at Expo:

  • Seminars, seminars and more seminars – if you know J Banks you know we love to LEARN. Continuing education is a main part of keeping both our designs and business practices on point. We loved listening to Michael Graves discuss his life inspiration and how he has grown his empire into what it is today. Other noteworthy programs included:
    • Hot New Hotel Brands: Powerhouses, Upstarts, and Global Game-Changers (loved Chris Jones with MODO)
    • Exceptional Service, Exceptional Profit: Building True Loyalty through Anticipation and Delight
    • The New Luxury in Restaurant Experiences: Authentic, Noteworthy, and On The Edge
    • Retail Meets Hospitality: Design Lessons Learned From The Best of Both Worlds.
  • Outdoor furniture is a key element that displays ultimate luxury in resort settings – the offerings at HD Expo were fresh, fun and fab!

This new lounge piece by Neoteric Luxury is designed to fit 8 people! And the Walter’s Wicker wing chair (as well as the loungers we saw at Marquee at the Cosmopolitan) made us immediately start designing our next project!

And Dedon’s new outdoor leather application makes this chair a standout. YES, it can take the rain and other weather elements.

  • Patio heaters reinvented! We fell for these amazing creations by Kindle Living. Designed to look like hip floor lamps – who knew we’d be calling a heater – HOT (figuratively of course!)
  • A new take on the classic ghost chair – these awesome plastic wings are for exterior or interior use – imagine these chairs at an outside dining or bar venue with the lamp heaters. Tres chic!

  • Amazing tiles by Inspired Finishes – metallic detailing, fantastic shapes and unexpected materials – a perfect fit for our European projects!

  • Hardware from Turnstyle Designs, Ltd – this beyond stylish hardware may just rival a Hermes bracelet!

  • Joni was a leader in lacquer 3 years ago when she designed the J Banks Collection, which included 5 initial lacquers and has since introduced more options each market. Now we are seeing the trend in both the residential markets as well as commercial lines. Love the shapes (and finish) of these retro yet glamorous creations.

  • We are sooo surface – but only when it involves these materials. Glass, resin, wood veneer. The options are endless and so is the application! Check out a just a FEW of our favorites.

  • Industry Events! We can’t deny that the show provided parties and events for socializing and networking. Each was filled with industry professionals, decision makers, vendors and manufactures, providing great opportunities to create new business contacts.

The Interior Design party at Marquee was a see and be seen, and celebrated the top 50 Hospitality Giants (J Banks and our project, the Sebastian-Vail, made it to the jumbotron!)

This year’s HD party by the pool had the largest turnout ever! We were thrilled to have Randy Wells, Vice President of Las Vegas Design Center, as our host for the evening.

  • The Memorial Day display at the Palazzo at the Venetian. A perfect tribute to all those who have served and serve in our armed forces. We applaud you for all that you do each and every day! Happy Memorial Day to all!

  1. Thanks for the great shot of the white Walters Wicker chair, second picture down. That is actually a product we represent from B&B Italia Outdoor as part of the Canasta collection. More information can be found on their website at
